TIMING OF NEUTERING CATS
Advising owners to wait until 6-7 months of age to spey or neuter a cat results in many families having unwanted litters of kittens
the cat group recommend 4 months as the age to consider neutering a female cat

Good point Clare – the Spayweek team have been sending out a letter to vets for the past four years that states “Both male and female cats should be neutered/spayed at 4-5 months of age”.
Vets traditionally spay/castrate cats at around 6 months of age, and it’s taking some time to get this message across.
I had a concern about stating firmly on television that “cats should be spayed at 4 months of age” because I felt that some vets might disagree with this, causing confusion for cat owners when they turned up expecting the vet to agree to do the operation. I don’t think many cats give birth between 5 and 7 months of age, so I didn’t think that it would cause a big problem to take this approach.
But yes, I agree that it’s good to do the op at this earlier age, and thank you for raising the point.
